UK Clocks Go Back: End of British Summer Time

British Summer Time ends on the last Sunday of October, when clocks across the United Kingdom go back from 2:00am to 1:00am. Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland all return to Greenwich Mean Time (UTC+0), which the UK then keeps until the last Sunday of March. The practical effect is one extra hour in bed and noticeably darker afternoons, sunset in Cardiff drops to around 4:50pm on the day of the change and continues to draw in until the winter solstice in December. The rest of the European Union changes at the same instant, 01:00 UTC, so continental Europe stays exactly one hour ahead of the UK throughout. North America does not change for another week, which means that for seven days the gap between London and New York is four hours instead of the usual five, a regular source of missed meetings.
