About Newtown

The largest town in Powys and in mid Wales, on the River Severn. Birthplace of Robert Owen, the social reformer and founder of the co-operative movement.

Like everywhere else in Wales, Newtown keeps Greenwich Mean Time from late October to late March and British Summer Time for the rest of the year. There is no local time variation anywhere in the country, but daylight is a different matter. At the June solstice Newtown receives roughly 12 minutes more daylight than Cardiff, a consequence of sitting further north.

Across the year the swing here is considerable: from 7h 39m of daylight around the winter solstice to 16h 50m at midsummer, a difference of more than 9 hours.
